{"id":254285,"date":"2023-08-01T20:22:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T14:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=254285"},"modified":"2023-08-01T20:22:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T14:52:53","slug":"measures-to-curtail-urban-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/measures-to-curtail-urban-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"Measures to curtail Urban Flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cMeasures to curtail Urban Flooding\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0published in <\/span><b>PIB on 31st July 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry of Jal Shakti has informed Lok Sabha about the steps the government is taking to tackle urban flooding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Urban Floods?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/urban-floods-causes-impacts-and-remedies\/\"><b>Click Here to read<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Main cause of Urban Flooding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increased incidence of high intensity rainfall of short duration is mainly responsible for urban floods, which is further compounded by unplanned growth, encroachment of natural water bodies and poor drainage system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Deaths due to floods:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Over 17,000 people died in floods and heavy rains between 2012 and 2021 in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Management of urban flooding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> falls under purview of the State Governments and the Urban Local Bodies \/ Urban Development Authorities who are responsible for maintaining the drainage and sewerage system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the steps taken to tackle urban flooding?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Master Plan for Artificial Recharge to Groundwater &#8211; 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It has been prepared by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) in collaboration with States\/UTs. The plan aims to construct about 1.42 crore rain water harvesting and artificial recharge structures in the country to harness 185 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM) of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of India is implementing<\/span><b> Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country in which special emphasis is being given for rainwater harvesting\/groundwater recharge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Amrit Sarovar Mission <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been launched with an aim of developing and rejuvenating 75 water bodies in each district of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-atal-bhujal-yojana-why-a-scheme-for-groundwater\/\"><b>Atal Bhujal Yojana<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scheme, provisions have been made for harvesting the rainwater through storm water drains into the water body (which is not receiving sewage\/effluent) &amp; creation\/ strengthening of storm water drains around the water body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Model Building Bye Laws (MBBL), 2016:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has been formulated by the Ministry of Housing &amp; Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for the States\/UTs.As per MBBL, all buildings having a plot size of 100 sq.m. or, more shall mandatorily include the complete proposal of rainwater harvesting. 35 States\/ UTs have adopted the features of the Bye Laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>National Water Policy (2012)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocates that the conservation of rivers, river corridors, water bodies and infrastructure should be undertaken in a scientifically planned manner through community participation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cMeasures to curtail Urban Flooding\u201d \u00a0published in PIB on 31st July 2023.
