These small fragments of nucleic acids are widely known as cell-free DNA (cfDNA).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How are cell-free DNA (cfDNA) produced?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cell-free DNA can be produced and released from a cell in various situations, such as during cell death when nucleic acids degrade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The degradation is influenced by multiple processes causing variations in the amount, size, and origin of cfDNA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The release of cfDNA could occur together with a variety of processes, including those required for normal development, those related to the development of certain cancers and those associated with several other diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the applications of cell-free DNA (cfDNA)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most widely used applications of cfDNA has been in screening foetuses for specific chromosomal abnormalities, an application known as non-invasive prenatal testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another emerging application of cfDNA is in the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also useful in understanding why a body is rejecting a transplanted organ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, cfDNA could also be used as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-what-are-biomarkers-discuss-its-potential-applications\/#:~:text=Biomarkers%20can%20be%20characteristic%20biological,diseased%20processes%20in%20the%20body.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biomarker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for neurological disorders like Alzheimer\u2019s disease, neuronal tumours, stroke, traumatic brain injury.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cCell-free DNA promises to transform how we find diseases\u201d\u00a0 published in The Hindu on 31st July 2023.
