What are efforts by the central government to improve LPG adoption in poorer and rural households?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Grameen Vitrak Yojana<\/strong> was launched in 2009. With its help, the rural distributor base<\/strong> has grown from 18% to 60% of the total LPG distributor base today.<\/p>\n

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana<\/strong> has provided more than 9.5 crore new households with LPG connections since 2016.<\/p>\n

What are issues with LPG adoption in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

LPG consumption saw an absolute reduction<\/strong> in FY23 after years of steady growth.<\/p>\n

As per Council on Energy, Environment and Water data<\/strong>, the share of Indian households using LPG as the primary cooking fue<\/strong>l had risen to 71% in 2020 from 33% in 2011.<\/p>\n

However, COVID\u00ad19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting volatility in crude and product prices on the other, have impacted universal use of LPG<\/strong> in Indian households.<\/p>\n

In 2020, subsidy for LPG consumption<\/strong> was withdrawn for all consumers. Average refill rates<\/strong> for active non\u00ad-PMUY consumers are in slow decline. 40% of PMUY consumers<\/strong> get two or less refills in a year now.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s dependence on imported LPG<\/strong> has steadily increased to over 64% in FY23 .<\/p>\n

Way forward- <\/strong><\/h2>\n

India\u2019s clean cooking policy must adopt clean\u00ad cooking technologies<\/strong>. LPG\u00ad only strategy <\/strong>needs\u00a0 a relook. Electric cooking<\/strong>, including induction cooktops<\/strong>, can be adopted.<\/p>\n

Rural households have the potential to switch some of their cooking requirements to electricity.<\/strong> According to a study conducted by CEEW<\/strong>, cooking with electricity remains more cost-effectiv<\/strong>e than using LPG even at a high tariff of \u20b98 per unit of electricity.<\/p>\n

In urban areas, around 10% of households already employ electric appliances for their cooking needs<\/strong>. They can set an example for the larger transition<\/strong> in rural regions.<\/p>\n

One possible approach is gradually increasing LPG prices<\/strong> beyond a certain threshold. This strategy could displace LPG in higher consumption groups. It will create a demand for new e-cooking technologies and models<\/strong>, and trigger a domino effect of adoption.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The initial demand from t could drive the growth of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem for e-cooking technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To support this transition, targeted assistance<\/strong> should be provided to manufacturers. They can be encouraged to focus on efficiency and design<\/strong> catering to the needs of Indian households.<\/p>\n

There is a requirement for financial support and business strategies<\/strong> that recognize the significance of India’s clean cooking shift<\/strong> by taking into account its positive impact on climate and air quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
