{"id":254779,"date":"2023-08-04T19:18:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T13:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=254779"},"modified":"2023-08-04T19:18:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T13:48:17","slug":"net-zero-emissions-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/net-zero-emissions-target\/","title":{"rendered":"Net zero emissions target"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Net zero emissions target<\/b><b>\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>PIB on 3rd August 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change has informed Lok Sabha about India\u2019s net zero emissions target and the measures it has taken to address the rapidly growing environmental problems in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>India\u2019s Greenhouse emissions:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is an emerging economy whose priority is to achieve development and poverty eradication goals. Due to this, Greenhouse emissions are bound to increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it is to be noted that India\u2019s historical cumulative emissions from 1850 to 2019 amount to less than 4 percent of cumulative carbon dioxide emissions of the world from the pre-industrial era, despite being home to 17% of the world\u2019s population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, India\u2019s responsibility for global warming thus far has been minimal and even today its annual per capita emissions are only about one-third of the global average.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>India\u2019s <\/b><b>Net Zero Emissions Target:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At COP 26 in November 2021, India has committed to achieving <\/span><b>net-zero emissions by 2070.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>India\u2019s long-term low-carbon development strategy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted to the UN is guided by principles of equity, climate justice, and the idea of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The strategy rests on seven key transitions to low-carbon development pathways.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include <\/span><b>1) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-carbon development of electricity systems consistent with development <\/span><b>2)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> develop an integrated, efficient and inclusive transport system <\/span><b>3) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promote adaptation in urban design, energy and material efficiency in buildings <\/span><b>4) p<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romoting economy-wide decoupling of growth from emissions and development of an efficient, innovative low emission industrial system <\/span><b>5) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development of carbon dioxide removal and related engineering solutions <\/span><b>6) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhancing forest and vegetation cover and <\/span><b>7) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economic and financial needs of low-carbon development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the steps taken by India <\/b><b>to address the growing environmental problems in the country?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-clean-air-programme-centre-aims-at-40-reduction-in-particulate-matter-by-2026\/\"><b>National Clean Air Programme(NCAP)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/prana-portal-for-air-pollution-launched\/\"><b>PRANA Portal<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/caqm-policy-to-combat-air-pollution-in-delhi-ncr\/#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20statutory%20body,in%20NCR%20and%20adjoining%20areas.\"><b>Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Area(CAQM)\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has moved <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><b>BS-IV to BS-VI norms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for fuel and vehicles from 1stApril, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation(SATAT) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been launched as an initiative to set up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) production plant and make CBG available in the market for use in automotive fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India has added ten wetlands to the List of Wetlands <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of International Importance (also called Ramsar Sites) within the framework of the Ramsar Convention, taking the total number of Ramsar Sites in India to 75, the highest in Asia,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has taken a defining step to <\/span><b>eliminate single use plastics. <\/b>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ban has been imposed on identified single use plastic items from 1st July 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/desertification-and-land-degradation-atlas-of-india\/\"><b>Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas of India<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government has initiated the work of <\/span><b>Circular Economy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules have been notified for 4 categories of waste a) Plastic waste, b) Waste tyre, c) Batteries, and E-Waste.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cNet zero emissions target\u201d\u00a0 published in PIB on 3rd August 2023.
