GS1- Social empowerment<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevance:<\/strong> issues related to women<\/p>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>&#8211; The article deals with the issue of sexual harassment of women at workplaces.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are some statistics related to sexual harassment of women at workplace?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to a 2022 <strong>report by the International Labour Organization<\/strong>, nearly 23% of employed individuals globally experienced violence and harassment at work.<\/p>\n<p>In India, an <strong>analysis conducted by Mint<\/strong> revealed that the country&#8217;s leading publicly traded companies witnessed a significant 70% increase in sexual harassment complaints during the period of 2022-23.<\/p>\n<p>This rise in reported cases was particularly prominent among<strong> 23 large-cap firms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Which factors are responsible for increased reporting of sexual harassment cases at workplaces?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the previous fiscal year, a significant number of employees transitioned back to work on <strong>hybrid models <\/strong>after the <strong>pandemic-induced shift <\/strong>to remote work. The increase in reported cases of harassment could potentially be attributed to this shift.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in reported cases could also be explained by<strong> improved reporting mechanism<\/strong>s due to <strong>clearer guidelines<\/strong> and <strong>policies implementation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is\u00a0 a greater sense of confidence in the <strong>redressal process <\/strong>and people now feel <strong>more empowered<\/strong> to come forward and seek resolution<\/p>\n<p>In Indian workplaces, <strong>awareness of rights and grievance mechanisms<\/strong> has increased significantly since the introduction of the <strong>Supreme Court&#8217;s Vishaka guidelines in 1997. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These guidelines laid the foundation for the <strong>Sexual Harassment of Women in the Workplace Act of 2013<\/strong>, commonly known as the<strong> PoSH Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well-managed companies are <strong>educating their staff <\/strong>about this law seriously. As a result, office employees now have a <strong>clearer understanding<\/strong> of the <strong>scope of the PoSH Act<\/strong> and the various forms of harassment.<\/p>\n<p>The global movement of speaking up and exposing predators has also influenced India Inc. Employers have established <strong>Vishaka panels<\/strong> to address harassment cases. Discussions about <strong>gender ratio and autonomy<\/strong> have become common topics in office conversations.<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted companies to address the <strong>emotional and physical safety<\/strong> of their employees.<\/p>\n<p>Well-managed companies have established a PoSH apparatus. But, they are exceptions.
