Out of these bird species, 78 (5%) are endemic to the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The highest number of endemic species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been recorded in the <\/span><b>Western Ghats,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 bird species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Some of the species recorded in the Western Ghats are the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Malabar Parakeet, Ashambu Laughing Thrush and White-bellied Sholakili.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Endemic bird species not sighted in last few decades: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 78 species, three species have not been recorded in the last few decades.They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Manipur Bush Quail <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Perdicula manipurensis), listed as \u2018Endangered\u2019 in IUCN Red List with its last recorded sighting in 1907;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013\u00a0 <\/span><b>Himalayan Quail <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Ophrysia superciliosa), listed as \u2018Critically Endangered\u2019 with its last recorded sighting in 1876 and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013\u00a0 <\/span><b>Jerdon\u2019s Courser<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rhinoptilus bitorquatus), listed as \u2018Critically Endangered\u2019 with its last confirmed sighting in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Threatened Endemic Bird species of India: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 78 endemic species, 25 are classified as \u2018Threatened\u2019 by the IUCN.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Three species (Bugun Liocichla or Liocichla bugunorum; Himalayan Quail or Ophrysia Superciliosa and Jerdon\u2019s Courser or Rhinoptilus bitorquatus) are listed as \u2018Critically\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endangered\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Five of the endemic birds are categorized as \u2018Endangered\u2019, and 17 as \u2018Vulnerable\u2019, while 11 are categorized as \u2018Near Threatened\u2019 on the IUCN Red List.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201c5% of birds in India are endemic, says Zoological Survey of India publication\u201d\u00a0 published in The Hindu on 7th August 2023.
