{"id":255152,"date":"2023-08-07T20:58:12","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T15:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=255152"},"modified":"2023-08-29T16:06:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T10:36:25","slug":"g-20-negotiators-face-climate-change-hurdle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/g-20-negotiators-face-climate-change-hurdle\/","title":{"rendered":"G-20 negotiators face climate change hurdle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; The post is based on the article <strong>\u201cG-20 negotiators face climate change hurdle\u201d <\/strong>published in <strong>\u201cThe Hindu\u201d <\/strong>on <strong>7th August 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: <\/strong>GS 2 &#8211; Global groupings and agreements<\/p>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>&#8211; G-20 negotiators are now worried about reaching a consensus over climate change issues ahead of the leaders\u2019 summit in September.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why are G20 negotiators worried?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The concerns have heightened following <strong>two ministerial meetings of the G-20 focused on energy transitions, the environment, and climate<\/strong> in July.<\/p>\n<p>These meetings failed to reach a consensus on crucial matters such as <strong>emission targets, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and climate finance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These differences spilled over into virtual Sherpa negotiations, where the initial<strong> version of the Leaders&#8217; Declaration<\/strong> was being discussed last week.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the <strong>Chairman&#8217;s Summary and Outcome document<\/strong>s included several sections labeled as <strong>&#8220;non-agreed paragraphs&#8221;<\/strong> among G-20 members.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the contentious issues between G-20 countries related to climate change?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is division between <strong>developed countries and the developing world<\/strong> concerning <strong>climate goals and climate finance. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A major point of contention is the wording related to <strong>&#8220;phasing out&#8221; fossil fuel<\/strong>s. It faced strong opposition from countries like India and Saudi Arabia. These countries preferred the term <strong>&#8220;phasing down&#8221; <\/strong>instead.<\/p>\n<p>There are significant differences among members regarding <strong>global emissions targets. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were disagreements on the target of <strong>peaking emissions by 2025 and achieving a 60% reduction in emissions by 2035<\/strong> in comparison to 2019 levels. Developing countries including India did not commit to these targets.<\/p>\n<p>Another contentious matter was related to the <strong>lack of funding<\/strong> from developed countries, such as the U.S. and Australia. They had promised to provide<strong> $100 billion annually<\/strong> starting from 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> Chairman&#8217;s Summary and Outcome document<\/strong> released in Chennai revealed further disagreements among G-20 members.<\/p>\n<p>One point of contention was the scope of the<strong> Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group&#8217;s mandate <\/strong>to discuss energy issues, given the existence of a <strong>separate Energy Transition Working Group. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, there were differing views on <strong>energy transitions <\/strong>and how to incorporate them into the document.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source&#8211; The post is based on the article \u201cG-20 negotiators face climate change hurdle\u201d published in \u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 7th August 2023.
