It is also known as the <\/span><b>\u201cpanda of the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d for the distinctive black circles around its eyes, along with a proportionally large dorsal fin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaquita is unique among the porpoises as it is the <\/span><b>only species of that family found in warm waters.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>dark ring around the eyes i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s its most striking feature, along with a proportionally large dorsal fin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Found in: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is only found in the northern-most part of the Gulf of California, Mexico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IUCN Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critically Endangered<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CITES: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appendix I<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Declining population: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaquita population has been declining continuously for decades due to bycatch in gillnet set to catch shrimp and fish including totoaba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Its numbers have fallen from a population of approximately 570 in 1997 to around 10 animals in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are <\/b><b>Porpoises?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porpoises are among the smallest members of the cetacean family (whales, porpoises and dolphins).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are only distant relatives of dolphins (they last had a common ancestor roughly 15 million years ago).There are only seven species of porpoise; the most popular being the widely distributed harbour porpoise.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cPlight of the vaquita forces International Whaling Commission to issue first extinction alert\u201d\u00a0 published in Down to Earth on 7th August 2023.
