Highlight the existing e-waste management practices in India.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Answer:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Challenges to environment:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effects on air &#8211; eg.,burning wires to get the copper in them by open air burning can release hydrocarbons into the air.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effects on water &#8211; When electronics containing heavy metals such as lead, barium, mercury, lithium are improperly disposed, these heavy metals leach through the soil to reach groundwater channels which eventually run to the surface as streams or small ponds of water. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effects on soil &#8211; toxic heavy metals and chemicals from e-waste enter the \u201csoil-crop-food pathway.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Challenges to health<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dangers posed by improper disposal on the environment ultimately have impacts on human beings -human cost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health effects of these toxins on humans include birth defects, brain, heart, liver, kidney and skeletal system damage. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They \u00a0also significantly affect the nervous and reproductive systems of the human body. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When computer monitors and other electronics are burned, they create cancer-producing dioxins which are released into the air we breathe. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If electronics are thrown in landfills, these toxins may leach into groundwater and affect local resources. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus improper disposal of e-waste not only has effects on the environment, it indirectly and ultimately poses grave dangers to humans and livestock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>E-waste management practices:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016:<\/li>\n<li>Over 21 products (Schedule-I) were included under the purview of the rule.<\/li>\n<li>Purview is extended to components of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE), along with their products.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthened the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)<\/li>\n<li>Producer Responsibility Organisation has been introduced to strengthen EPR.
