What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Over 200 years ago, the Malaiyali tribe settled on Yelagiri hill in Tamil Nadu, building clay huts for various purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, only one old hut remains as a symbol of their transition <\/span>from foraging to a more modern lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Maliyali Tribe?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Malaiyali tribe \u2014 <\/span>malai<\/span><\/i> meaning \u201chill\u201d and <\/span>yali<\/span><\/i> meaning \u201cpeople\u201d \u2014 is spread across Tamil Nadu\u2019s hilly region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unique Lifestyle of Maliyali Tribe:<\/b><\/p>\n

Red clay played a pivotal role in building huts, burying the dead and sustaining the tribe\u2019s lifecycle from birth to death.<\/span><\/p>\n

Huts were constructed with red clay on teak wood frames, embodying the tribe\u2019s connection to nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>roof of the huts were made of dry bamboo leaves and cow dung, preventing leaks during monsoons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite its deceivingly small exterior, the hut accommodates eight people and includes an attic (paran) for storage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally built for living, the hut later served as a seed storage space after harvest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hut stands on a stilt-like structure made of teakwood. This holds the house two feet above the ground to keep rodents at bay and to prevent the house from flooding during torrential rain.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a dedicated space for the grains. That is how precious agriculture was to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance of the Lifestyle of Maliyali Tribe:<\/b> Despite changes over time, the huts remain a significant part of the tribe’s history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
