What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

A report has been released on the initial phase of the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI).<\/span><\/p>\n

The report highlights that even though funding commitments have risen for Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IP and LC) to improve conservation.But their overall funding situation hasn’t really improved.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, donors have given Indigenous Peoples and local communities less than 1% of the funds for addressing climate change impacts and adaptations.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI)?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI) was endorsed by <\/span>Global Environment Facility (GEF) in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim: <\/b>To enhance Indigenous Peoples\u2019 and Local Communities\u2019 (IPs and LCs) efforts to protect land, waters and natural resources to deliver global environmental benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The initiative <\/span>will support enhanced Indigenous and community stewardship across 7.5 million hectares of landscapes, seascapes, and territories with high biodiversity and irreplaceable ecosystems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical support and supervision by: <\/b>Conservation International and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance: <\/b>Indigenous Peoples and local communities make up just 5% of the world’s population. But they steward 25% of land and 40% of intact ecosystems on Earth. Yet, many have lacked financial support to improve and scale their sustainable management of these territories.<\/span><\/p>\n
