{"id":257327,"date":"2023-08-25T19:16:39","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T13:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=257327"},"modified":"2023-08-25T19:16:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T13:46:39","slug":"the-fujiwhara-effect-when-cyclones-dance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-fujiwhara-effect-when-cyclones-dance\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fujiwhara effect: When cyclones \u2018dance\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cThe Fujiwhara effect: When cyclones \u2018dance\u2019<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0published in <\/span><b>Indian Express on 24th August 2023.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The western coast of the United States recently experienced Hurricane Hilary, which transformed into a sub-tropical storm upon reaching the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This event led to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) issuing its inaugural tropical storm watch for certain areas of Southern California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California had an exceptionally wet winter with multiple \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/atmospheric-rivers-californias-record-breaking-storm-what-is-the-pineapple-express-phenomenon-underlying-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atmospheric river<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 storms, and the area also witnessed the intriguing phenomenon of the \u2018Fujiwhara effect\u2019 during one of these storms, where two low-pressure areas interacted in an unexpected manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Fujiwhara effect?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the National Weather Service (NWS), when two hurricanes or cyclones spinning in the same direction are brought close together, they begin \u2018an intense dance around their common center\u2019 \u2013 this interaction between two cyclones is called the <\/span><b>Fujiwhara effect.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fujiwhara effect was <\/span><b>identified by Sakuhei Fujiwhara, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Japanese meteorologist whose first paper recognising the Fujiwhara cases was published in 1921.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first known instance of the effect was in 1964 in the western Pacific Ocean when typhoons Marie and Kathy merged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What happens in the Fujiwhara effect?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the National Weather Service, one of three things happen when the storms come near each other:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If one hurricane is a lot stronger than the other, the smaller one will orbit it and eventually come crashing into its vortex to be absorbed<\/span><b> (or)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If the two storms are close to the same size, they can gravitate toward each other until they reach a common point where they either merge or they spin each other around for a while before they spin off in different directions <\/span><b>(or)\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 If the two hurricanes are intense enough, they may merge with one another, leading to the formation of a mega cyclone capable of wreaking havoc along coastlines.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cThe Fujiwhara effect: When cyclones \u2018dance\u2019\u201d \u00a0published in Indian Express on 24th August 2023.
