{"id":257822,"date":"2023-08-29T19:06:18","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T13:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=257822"},"modified":"2023-08-29T19:06:18","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T13:36:18","slug":"somatic-genetic-variants-a-genomic-revolution-hiding-inside-our-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/somatic-genetic-variants-a-genomic-revolution-hiding-inside-our-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Somatic genetic variants: A genomic revolution hiding inside our cells"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cSomatic genetic variants: A genomic revolution hiding inside our cells\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>The Hindu on 28th August 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have been aware of <\/span><b>Somatic Genetic Variations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for quite some time but there has been a recent surge in the volume of data related to these variations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Somatic Cells?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somatic cells are the cells in the body other than sperm and egg cells (which are called germ cells).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In humans, somatic cells are diploid, meaning they contain two sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DNA mutations in somatic cells can affect an individual, but they cannot be passed on to their offspring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Somatic Genetic Mutations?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans have<\/span><b> 23 pairs of chromosomes, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one from each parent, which carry our genetic information or blueprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After fertilization, a single cell with 23 chromosomes begins dividing, ultimately creating nearly a trillion cells in the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During cell division, DNA is accurately copied thanks to error-correcting proteins, but there&#8217;s still a very low error rate (0.64-0.78 mutations per billion base pairs per division).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An error that occurs in the DNA after birth but during development is called a <\/span><b>Somatic Genetic Mutation.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This occurrence of mutation is driven by the repeated \u2018copy-pasting\u2019 of the genome \u2013 which means <\/span><b>there will be more somatic genetic mutations the older an individual is and the higher the turnover of the tissue.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turnover is the replacement of old cells with new ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, a somatic genetic mutation can render a cell fitter than others, which lead to the formation of tumours.These mutations are called <\/span><b><i>driver<\/i><\/b><b> mutations.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the importance of Somatic genetic variants?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Cancer signatures:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Somatic genetic variants play an important role in the development of cancers.We now know that somatic changes can cause a cancer to develop and that cancers can accelerate the development of somatic changes.So they can help with early detection, diagnosis, and prognosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Development of Genetic Diseases:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many genetic conditions arise from somatic genetic variants. Obviously, these conditions are not inherited from either parent but are due to new genetic variations that have arisen during development. So the severity and distribution of the disease depends on how early or late during development the corresponding mutation occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Beneficial in some cases:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In some instances, somatic changes can be beneficial in a genetic disease \u2013 by changing a deleterious change to a normal one, a phenomenon known as <\/span><b>revertant mosaicism.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 For example, around 10% of cases of <\/span><b>Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a rare genetic immuno- deficiency, have been found to have revertant mosaicism, as a result alleviating the severity of the disease in many individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues(SMaHT) Network?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Launched by: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. National Institutes of Health\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To discover somatic variants, develop tools for study, and improve analysis for biological and clinical insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Investment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. government has invested $140 million to study somatic variants in post-mortem samples.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cSomatic genetic variants: A genomic revolution hiding inside our cells\u201d\u00a0 published in The Hindu on 28th August 2023 What is the News?
