{"id":258293,"date":"2023-09-01T20:32:49","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T15:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=258293"},"modified":"2023-09-01T20:32:49","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T15:02:49","slug":"40-per-cent-elephant-corridors-report-increase-in-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/40-per-cent-elephant-corridors-report-increase-in-use\/","title":{"rendered":"40 per cent elephant corridors report increase in use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>40 per cent elephant corridors report increase in use<\/b><b>\u201d\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>New Indian Express 31st August 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elephant Corridors of India 2023 report has been released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report has been prepared by Project Elephant with technical support from the Wildlife Institute of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Elephant Corridors?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elephant corridors are linear, narrow, natural habitat linkages that allow elephants to move between secure habitats without being disturbed by humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the key findings of the Elephant<\/b><b> Corridors of India 2023 report?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150 elephant corridors have been identified in 15 elephant-ranging states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of elephant corridors of India have reported an increase in use by the elephants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 29 corridors \u2013 constituting 19% of the total &#8211; have recorded a decline in use by the elephants over the years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These corridors are primarily affected by encroachment, mining activities, development of linear infrastructure such as roads and railway tracks and other human interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, around 10% of the elephant corridors have become impaired over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Bengal has the highest number (26) of identified elephant corridors in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are six transnational corridors between India and Nepal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommendations: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report has recommended following measures to safeguard corridors.These measures are: Habitat enrichment, accurate demarcation, measures to check human interventions, and legal protection under appropriate laws at the state level.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201c40 per cent elephant corridors report increase in use\u201d\u00a0 published in New Indian Express 31st August 2023 What is the News?
