An international research team has<\/span> identified seven previously unknown species of leaf insects, also known as walking leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking leaves are part of the phasmatodea order.They are also referred to as <\/span>\u201cphasmids\u201d or \u201cstick and leaf insects.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

They are<\/span> known for their unusual appearance as they look confusingly<\/span> similar to parts of plants <\/b>such as twigs, bark or in the case of leaf insects as leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

They <\/span>feed on plants<\/b> and typically inhabit densely vegetated areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Range:<\/b> Their natural range extends from islands in the Indian Ocean, across parts of mainland South Asia and Southeast Asia, to Papua New Guinea and Australia in the western Pacific.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are also largely nocturnal<\/b>, resulting in a relative lack of movement during the day that makes locating them quite difficult in the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance:<\/b> There are around 3,500 known species of stick and leaf insects.But there are currently just over 100 described species of leaf insect.<\/span><\/p>\n
