<\/b><\/strong>As per the UNCTAD in its ‘Global Trade Update’ on June 21<\/b><\/strong>, the outlook for worldwide trade in the latter half of 2023 is gloomy due to a series of <\/span>negative factors.<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

These factors include reduced\u00a0global economic forecasts, ongoing inflation, financial vulnerabilities, and geopolitical tensions<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0taking center stage.<\/p>\n

Food insecurity<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0has been exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine,<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0the effects of\u00a0climate change<\/b><\/strong>, and the various policy responses to combat inflationary pressures<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0at the national level. The\u00a0potential onset of an El Ni\u00f1o<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0further complicates the situation.<\/p>\n

What were the important developments during the summit?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The joint statement issued by leaders during the ASEAN-India summit, titled ‘Enhancing Food Security and Nutrition in Response to Crises,’ underscores the collective concern felt within the region regarding the heightened global food insecurity.<\/p>\n

This insecurity has been exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine, the effects of climate change, and the various policy responses to combat inflationary pressures at the national level.<\/p>\n

How India positioned itself at the ASEAN summit?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Modi emphasized the importance of a post-COVID-19 world order governed by rules <\/b><\/strong>and advocated for a free and open Indo-Pacific. <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was clearly aimed at certain members of the Asian bloc<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0who are growing increasingly concerned about\u00a0China’s recent assertiveness<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister’s implicit message to ASEAN members is that India is a dependable, long-term strategic and economic partner<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0that has no territorial ambitions<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

India also aimed to position itself as a voice that amplifies the concerns of the Global South<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What are trade related issues between two countries?<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n

For India,\u00a0trade relations <\/b><\/strong>with eastern economies have grown in volume <\/b><\/strong>but have shown significant imbalances<\/b><\/strong>. Imports are far exceeding India’s exports.<\/p>\n

The widening trade deficit<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0and concerns that Chinese products are exploiting lower tariffs <\/b><\/strong>under the FTA to enter the Indian market have contributed to a\u00a0review of the agreement<\/b><\/strong>. It is expected to be completed in 2025.<\/p>\n
