The <strong>efficiency metric known as wafer yield <\/strong>falls well below 50% for this technology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In contrast, Taiwan&#8217;s Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited utilizes a <strong>7nm manufacturing process <\/strong>with a <strong>wafer yield exceeding 90%. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Huawei <strong>SMIC&#8217;s approach<\/strong> becomes<strong> excessively costly.<\/strong> It is reaching up to <strong>ten times<\/strong> the expenses incurred by other market players.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The <strong>7nm manufacturing process <\/strong>represents the<strong> highest level of China&#8217;s capabilities <\/strong>given the currently available <strong>Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) lithography tools.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sanctions imposed by the United States denied Beijing access to the most advanced lithography tool in the market\u2014the <strong>Extreme Ultraviolet (EUVs)<\/strong>. It forced China to rely on <strong>DUVs <\/strong>for fabricating the<strong> Kirin 9000 chipset. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While DUVs can technically be used to create <strong>7nm chips<\/strong>, the process is<strong> inefficient<\/strong>. It is leading to reduced yield.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>There are doubts about Huawei-SMIC&#8217;s ability to engage in<strong> large-scale production<\/strong> of the current chipsets. Recent restrictions imposed by the U.S. and its allies pose a challenge for Chinese companies looking to scale up the<strong> production of 7nm chips.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>What is the comparison between the Chinese chip manufacturing ecosystem and US chip manufacturing ecosystem?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The<strong> decentralized nature<\/strong> of the <strong>technology ecosystem<\/strong> led by the United States enables individual countries to <strong>specialize<\/strong> based on their unique<strong> comparative advantages. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is evident in the <strong>current supply chain<\/strong>. The United States excels in <strong>Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and design. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The Netherlands specializes in manufacturing <strong>lithography tools. <\/strong>Japan is known for producing <strong>specialized materials.<\/strong> Taiwan and South Korea excel in <strong>fabrication.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In contrast, China faces the challenge of <strong>achieving self-sufficiency<\/strong> in each segment of the semiconductor value chain and attaining a<strong> high level of sophistication<\/strong> in each of these areas to remain competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Specializing in any single segment of the chip value chain alone requires <strong>substantial capital investment.<\/strong> It is practically impossible in every segment.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>In the U.S.-led ecosystem, the costs can be shared among <strong>participating countries,<\/strong> most of which have significantly higher per-capita income levels than China.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, to compete effectively with this larger resource pool, China must achieve a <strong>higher success rate<\/strong> for every research dollar it invests.<\/p>\n<p>This presents a challenge.
