The Criminal Justice System in India has been marred by <strong>several systemic challenges<\/strong>. The most fundamental flaw is that it is still <strong>heavily dependent on colonial era legislations<\/strong> like the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872. The Government has taken a progressive step by introducing the <strong><em>Bharat Nyaya Sanhita<\/em> Bill<\/strong>, <strong><em>Bharat Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita<\/em> Bill<\/strong> and <strong><em>Bharat Sakshya<\/em> Bill, 2023<\/strong> to replace the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively. The Bills have been referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee and it is hoped that all the concerns raised by the experts would be deliberated and duly addressed. However, the <strong>Government shouldn&#8217;t limit the reform process to these 3 Bills\/Acts<\/strong>, and take urgent steps to <strong>reform other aspects of the criminal justice system<\/strong> viz., <strong>the Courts<\/strong>, <strong>the Police<\/strong> and <strong>the Jails<\/strong>.
