But, it can quickly <strong>become deadly.<\/strong> In severe instances, individuals experience<strong> respiratory distress and inflammation of the brai<\/strong>n. The <strong>mortality rate<\/strong> can reach as high as 75 percent.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no vaccine available to protect against this pathogen. <strong>Treatment options<\/strong> are primarily focused on <strong>alleviating the symptoms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nipah virus was initially identified during an epidemic that affected <strong>pig farmers in Malaysia and Singapore <\/strong>back in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Research conducted by the ICMR)has indicated that <strong>fruit bats <\/strong>serve as the<strong> natural reservoir<\/strong> for this virus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Human-to-human transmission<\/strong> can occur through <strong>close contact, <\/strong>either at home or in hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Each outbreak increases the potential for the <strong>virus to mutate<\/strong>. It raises the possibility of a more <strong>efficient transmission strain.<\/strong> The World Health Organization classifies Nipah as a <strong>virus of concern.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Way forward- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends that countries located in Nipah hotspots should create <strong>strategies to predict, monitor, and manage outbreaks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is crucial to gain insights into what is happening within the <strong>virus&#8217;s animal reservoir<\/strong> before it crosses over to infect humans.<\/p>\n<p>There is a need for<strong> collaborative efforts <\/strong>across different fields, involving professionals in human, animal, and environmental health.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential to <strong>identify patterns<\/strong> of th<strong>e virus&#8217;s circulation <\/strong>among fruit bats and document the instances when it jumps between species.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source&#8211; The post is based on the article \u201cExpress View: Checking Nipah\u201d published in \u201cThe Indian Express\u201d on 15th September 2023.
