News<\/strong>– Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently said that the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) could turn India into a major producer and exporter of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).<\/p>\n

Why adoption of sustainable biofuels is the best option for the aviation industry to achieve carbon neutrality?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 2022, aviation was responsible for 2% of all carbon emissions. I<\/strong>t will increase rapidly unless the aviation industry discovers a way to reduce its carbon footprint. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Developing electric planes<\/strong> on the scale of commercial jetliners<\/strong> remains a technological challenge.<\/strong> These planes would require exceptionally lightweight batteries.<\/strong> Creating an airframe design<\/strong> capable of taking off solely on electric power is a significant hurdle.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the industry’s current best option for achieving carbon neutrality is the widespread adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs)<\/strong>, coupled with carbon capture technologies. <\/strong><\/p>\n

What are challenges in achieving carbon neutrality through Sustainable Aviation Fuels?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of the critical concerns is the capacity to supply SAFs<\/strong>. Traditional biofuels often rely on large quantities of agricultural produce,<\/strong> such as crops like sugarcane and corn,<\/p>\n

These crops are diverted from primary agricultural purposes <\/strong>like food production. As a result, there are limitations on the available output.<\/p>\n

There are alternative biomass sources<\/strong> for SAFs, including bio-waste <\/strong>like used cooking oil, forest residue, agricultural waste, and municipal refuse. However, ensuring an adequate supply of feedstock will still be a challenging endeavour.<\/p>\n

The production process<\/strong> for sustainable biofuels is lengthy and complex.<\/strong> It makes them more<\/strong> expensive t<\/strong>han traditional jet fuel.<\/p>\n

SAFs have a lower energy density.<\/strong> It means that larger volumes <\/strong>are required to refuel aircraft. Similar to battery technology,<\/strong> these factors present significant hurdles<\/strong> to the widespread adoption of SAFs.<\/p>\n

The true test of SAFs <\/strong>will materialize when carbon trading gains significance. At that point, comprehensive track records<\/strong> will emerge<\/p>\n

Many questions the validity of SAFs’ assertion<\/strong> of an 80% reduction in emissions<\/strong>, even under the best-case scenario.<\/p>\n

What more should be done?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The strategy is to begin with a small proportion of biofuel<\/strong>, perhaps as low as 1%. It should be mixed with regular jet fuel. <\/strong>There should be a gradual increase in bio-conten<\/strong>t as aircraft adapted for SAFs become more prevalent.<\/p>\n

The adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) will necessitate robust regulatory measures. <\/strong>This process has already commenced globally.<\/p>\n

Carbon offsets <\/strong>have gradually become a part of the equation through the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation<\/strong> established by the UN’s leading authority in this sector.<\/p>\n
