The target is to increase the fleet to a minimum of <strong>175 warships by 203<\/strong>5.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, China already possesses the <strong>world&#8217;s largest navy.<\/strong> It comprises <strong>355 warships and submarines.<\/strong> The projections indicate that this number will <strong>expand to 555<\/strong> within the next five to six years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Production-<\/strong> It is widely acknowledged that <strong>India&#8217;s shipbuilding rate<\/strong> is very low. While China constructs approximately 14 warships annually, India manages only four.<\/p>\n<p>There has been an improvement in <strong>construction speed<\/strong>. But the <strong>retirement of older ships <\/strong>continually puts India at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For instance,<\/strong> despite the induction of <strong>five Scorpene submarines<\/strong>, the navy falls short by eight submarines compared to the target of 24 by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indigenization-<\/strong> India has achieved <strong>90% indigenization<\/strong> in the <strong>float component<\/strong> of warships but has fallen short in the <strong>propulsion and fight components (weapons and sensors).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Operational-<\/strong> India&#8217;s <strong>strategic presence<\/strong> spans the<strong> Indo-Pacific<\/strong> from Africa to the western Pacific. So, establishing <strong>navy-led joint theatre commands<\/strong> is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>However, the process of <strong>establishing theatre commands<\/strong> has been slow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should be done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a pressing need to enhance the navy&#8217;s capital budget, expand the technical foundation for warship construction and recognize the economic benefits of warship building<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <strong>strong political push<\/strong> is needed to expedite this process. There should be a greater emphasis on increasing the <strong>navy&#8217;s capital budget<\/strong> and <strong>diversifying the technical expertise<\/strong> in warship construction.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, warship construction can have a<strong> multiplier effect.<\/strong> One shipyard job creating up to six jobs in related industries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source&#8211; The post is based on the article \u201cShips Of State\u201d published in the \u201cThe Times of India\u201d on 19th September 2023.
