News<\/strong>– Indian navy has ordered 68 warships and vessels.<\/p>\n

What are the challenges faced by the Indian navy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Strength- <\/strong>Currently, India’s navy boasts 132 warships<\/strong> alongside 143 aircraft and 130 helicopters. The target is to increase the fleet to a minimum of 175 warships by 203<\/strong>5.<\/p>\n

In contrast, China already possesses the world’s largest navy.<\/strong> It comprises 355 warships and submarines.<\/strong> The projections indicate that this number will expand to 555<\/strong> within the next five to six years.<\/p>\n

Production-<\/strong> It is widely acknowledged that India’s shipbuilding rate<\/strong> is very low. While China constructs approximately 14 warships annually, India manages only four.<\/p>\n

There has been an improvement in construction speed<\/strong>. But the retirement of older ships <\/strong>continually puts India at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n

For instance,<\/strong> despite the induction of five Scorpene submarines<\/strong>, the navy falls short by eight submarines compared to the target of 24 by 2030.<\/p>\n

Indigenization-<\/strong> India has achieved 90% indigenization<\/strong> in the float component<\/strong> of warships but has fallen short in the propulsion and fight components (weapons and sensors).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Operational-<\/strong> India’s strategic presence<\/strong> spans the Indo-Pacific<\/strong> from Africa to the western Pacific. So, establishing navy-led joint theatre commands<\/strong> is crucial.<\/p>\n

However, the process of establishing theatre commands<\/strong> has been slow.<\/p>\n

What should be done?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a pressing need to enhance the navy’s capital budget, expand the technical foundation for warship construction and recognize the economic benefits of warship building.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A strong political push<\/strong> is needed to expedite this process. There should be a greater emphasis on increasing the navy’s capital budget<\/strong> and diversifying the technical expertise<\/strong> in warship construction.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, warship construction can have a multiplier effect.<\/strong> One shipyard job creating up to six jobs in related industries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
