How is the US increasing its presence in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Ties with Vietnam-<\/strong> During US President Joe Biden’s visit to Hanoi, the two countries elevated their Comprehensive Partnership to a more comprehensive and strategic level<\/strong>, known as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Vietnam shares a sensitive land border <\/strong>with China and is involved in disputes over Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, it’s worth noting that in the joint statement<\/strong> issued during the visit, Vietnam was cautious not to include language<\/strong> that might provoke China. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ties with Philippines- <\/strong>There has been a significant enhancement of the Philippines military alliance<\/strong> with the United States.<\/p>\n

This has enabled the US to regain access to its key bases<\/strong> in the Philippines, after a period of several years without such access. The US has been granted permission to use four additional bases<\/strong> in the country.<\/p>\n

In May 2023, new guidelines were issued for the 1951 treaty<\/strong>. It outlined more specific commitments<\/strong> by the US to address security threats to the Philippine<\/strong>s. One notable provision now allows for joint patrols<\/strong> by US and Philippine forces in the EEZ.<\/p>\n

Trilateral security framework- <\/strong>It involves the United States, Japan and South Korea<\/strong>. Efforts to bring these two allies together in a truly coordinated trilateral alliance<\/strong> had been ongoing for some time.<\/p>\n

Recent events, such as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia and the potential deepening of military cooperation<\/strong> between these two nations, have further fuelled concerns in Seoul and Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Under US sponsorship, the leaders of the United States, Japan, and South Korea adopted the Camp David Principles. <\/strong><\/p>\n

These principles call for annual trilateral summits<\/strong>, the establishment of a hotline<\/strong> among leaders, intelligence sharing, and the conduct of annual military exercises. <\/strong><\/p>\n

All three countries view the situation in the Taiwan Strait<\/strong> as a factor affecting regional peace and security. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Multi-tiered security framework in the Indo-Pacific region-<\/strong>\u00a0 At the lowest level are partnerships, <\/strong>including those with countries like Vietnam, Singapore, and Thailand.<\/p>\n

The next tier includes the Quad<\/strong>, comprising India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. India holds a unique position within the Quad as it is not an ally but maintains strategic partnerships<\/strong> with each of the other member nations.<\/p>\n

At a higher level, there is a trilateral military alliance <\/strong>involving the United States, Japan, and South Korea.<\/p>\n

Finally, at the apex is AUKUS<\/strong>. It is an enhanced military alliance<\/strong> between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.<\/p>\n

AUKUS is committed to empower Australia<\/strong> to become a nuclear submarine-capable nation, <\/strong>and operate in collaboration <\/strong>with the naval capabilities<\/strong> of the United States and the United Kingdom in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is ASEAN’s approach towards Indo-pacific?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Some individual nations, such as Laos and Cambodia, maintain strong alignment <\/strong>with China. Others are cautious<\/strong> about provoking China.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, there are indications of a potential shift.<\/strong> ASEAN nations are currently conducting their inaugural naval exercises<\/strong> off the Natuna islands t<\/strong>his month.<\/p>\n

These islands fall within Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) <\/strong>but are also claimed by China through its disputed nine-dash line<\/strong>, which covers the entire South China Sea. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This could be an early sign of ASEAN countries pushing back against China’s exaggerated territorial assertions <\/strong>in the region.<\/p>\n

What is the Indian approach towards Indo-pacific?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

India is increasingly embracing its role as a willing participan<\/strong>t in the evolving US Indo-Pacific strategy<\/strong>. It has already finalized three foundational agreements that enhance interoperability <\/strong>between the armed forces of both nations.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, India has secured two master ship repair agreements: <\/strong>one with the US Navy and the Larsen and Toubro shipyard near Chennai, and another with the Mazagaon Docks in August.<\/p>\n

American naval vessels<\/strong> have begun using these ports for repairs and refitment. <\/strong>It would be relatively straightforward to extend these facilities to other members of the Quad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
