What are arguments in favour of One Nation, One Election? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Election Commission <\/strong>of India proposed synchronised elections in 1983 and 1999.<\/p>\n

In 2018, the NITI Aayog <\/strong>introduced the concept of One Nation, One Election.<\/p>\n

Financial burden-<\/strong> The Indian electoral system involves large costs<\/strong> during each election cycle. India’s election machinery is in constant operation<\/strong> due to elections at various levels of government throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The expenses associated with conducting elections, security of polling stations<\/strong>, deploying security forces, and logistics <\/strong>are substantial. In addition to the financial costs,<\/strong> there are logistical challenges<\/strong> and a strain on human resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Impact on governance-<\/strong> Frequent elections demand a significant workforce<\/strong>. It includes police personnel, administrative staff from various departments, and educators like teachers and lecturers.<\/p>\n

This disrupts regular government functions <\/strong>and delays development projects. It also impacts the academic calendars <\/strong>of schools and colleges.<\/p>\n

Political polarization-<\/strong> Regular elections often contribute to political polarization<\/strong> since politicians are constantly engaged in election campaigning. They prioritize short-term gains over long-term policy planning. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier experience-<\/strong> India had experienced simultaneous elections during specific periods. Notably, elections held in 1952, 1957, and 1962, as well as in 1967 followed the One Nation, One Election principle.<\/p>\n

What are the advantages of One Nation, One Election? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Improved governance<\/strong>– Reduced election frequency would minimize disruptions in government operations<\/strong>. It will allow bureaucrats and elected officials to focus more on governance. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Promote national interest-<\/strong> it promotes cooperation among political parties. When elections are synchronized, parties would be compelled to seek common ground and consensu<\/strong>s on vital national and state-level matters. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This could lead to more collaborative policymaking<\/strong> and a better, unified understanding of issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Political participation-<\/strong> Such an approach would alleviate voter fatigue <\/strong>and encourage more active participation in elections<\/strong>.
