{"id":263553,"date":"2023-10-10T19:48:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=263553"},"modified":"2023-10-10T20:22:21","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:52:21","slug":"why-punjab-wants-to-ban-the-cultivation-of-pusa-44-paddy-variety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/why-punjab-wants-to-ban-the-cultivation-of-pusa-44-paddy-variety\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Punjab wants to ban the cultivation of PUSA-44 paddy variety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the articl<\/span><b>e \u201c<\/b><b>Why Punjab wants to ban the cultivation of PUSA-44 paddy variety<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in<\/span><b> \u201cIndian Express\u201d on 10th October 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjab Chief Minister has announced that the state will ban the cultivation of the PUSA-44 paddy variety from 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When did Punjab farmers begin cultivating PUSA-44?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PUSA-44 is a variety of paddy.It was developed in 1993 by the Delhi-based Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequently, Punjab\u2019s farmers started sowing it in a few areas initially.After getting a high yield from the crops, they started increasing the area under PUSA-44 by multiplying the seed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of 2010s, it had gained widespread popularity among farmers across the Punjab, covering approximately 70 to 80% of the area under paddy cultivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2018, the Punjab government reduced the area under PUSA-44 to 18% of the total area under paddy, but it rebounded to 22% in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the reasons behind the ban of PUSA-44?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Extended Maturity Period: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PUSA-44 takes about 160 days to mature, which is much longer (about 35-40 days) than other paddy varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Water Conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Punjab is facing severe groundwater depletion and banning PUSA-44 is a measure to conserve irrigation water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stubble Burning:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PUSA-44 is harvested right before the ideal time for wheat sowing which is around November 1st.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Farmers typically need 20 to 25 days between paddy harvesting and wheat sowing to effectively handle stubble disposal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 However, PUSA-44&#8217;s late harvest makes it difficult to manage stubble through both in-field and out-of-field methods.This leads to more incidents of stubble burning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Moreover, PUSA varieties produce about 2 percent more stubble compared to shorter varieties, which is a significant concern when cultivated extensively.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cWhy Punjab wants to ban the cultivation of PUSA-44 paddy variety\u201d published in \u201cIndian Express\u201d on 10th October 2023 What is the News?
