{"id":263557,"date":"2023-10-10T19:44:17","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=263557"},"modified":"2023-10-10T20:21:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:51:40","slug":"smart-fence-along-myanmar-border-in-the-pipeline-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/smart-fence-along-myanmar-border-in-the-pipeline-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart fence along Myanmar border in the pipeline: govt."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cSmart fence along Myanmar border in the pipeline: govt.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><b>\u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 10th October 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of India is planning to build an advanced smart fencing system of 100 km along the Myanmar border to strengthen the existing surveillance system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Free Movement Regime(FMR) along the India Myanmar Border(IMB)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India shares a 1,643-km border with Myanmar which passes through Arunachal Pradesh\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(520 km), Nagaland (215 km), Manipur (398 km) and Mizoram (510 km).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Free Movement Regime (FMR) exists between India and Myanmar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the FMR, every member of the hill tribes, who is either a citizen of India or a citizen\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Myanmar and who is resident of any area within 16 km on either side of the Indo-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar border can cross the border on production of a border pass (one year validity)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued by the competent authority and can stay up to two weeks per visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Manipur government has suspended the FMR since the 2020 post COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why was FMR conceptualized between India and Myanmar?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The border between India and Myanmar was demarcated by the British in 1826, without seeking the opinion of the people living in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The border effectively divided people of the same ethnicity and culture into two nations without their consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, that&#8217;s why FMR was conceptualized to facilitate people-to-people contact.Apart from that, FMR was also supposed to provide impetus to local trade and business.The region has a long history of trans-border commerce through customs and border haats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is the Government now planning to build a smart fencing system <\/b><b>along the India Myanmar Border?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfenced border and unregulated migration from Myanmar have been attributed as some of the factors responsible for the ethnic violence in Manipur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, out of the 201 insurgency-related incidents registered in all the northeast States, as many as 137 incidents were registered in Manipur.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cSmart fence along Myanmar border in the pipeline: govt.\u201d published in \u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 10th October 2023 What is the News?
