What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Union Health Secretary has delivered the keynote address at the National Conclave on \u201cAugmented Zoonotic Diseases Surveillance at Human \u2013 Wildlife Interface\u201d and National Conclave for Endorsement of \u201cNational Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key highlights from the address of the Union Health Secretary on Zoonotic Disease and Snakebite Envenoming?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Zoonotic disease<\/b><\/a> is one of the areas of concern which is affecting humans as well as animals’ health<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 75% of new infectious diseases that have emerged in the last 30 years are zoonotic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Limited knowledge and skills to identify zoonotic diseases and limited diagnostic facilities at all levels has resulted in neglect of the infectious diseases caused due to zoonotic pathogens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Hence, in the light of these new and emerging health threats, there is a growing importance of the \u2018<\/span>One Health<\/span><\/a>\u2019 approach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Snake Evenoming<\/b>: Snake bite is a neglected public health issue in many tropical and subtropical countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Most of these occur in Africa, Asia and Latin America.In Asia up to 2 million people are envenomed by snakes each year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In India, snake bites continue to be a huge problem causing nearly 60,000 deaths annually.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Measures taken by India:<\/b> Union Health Ministry is implementing various national programs under National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 National One Health Programs for Prevention and Control of Zoonoses (NOHPPCZ)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 National Rabies Control Programs (NRCP)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Program for Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis (PPCL)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Snake Bite Prevention and Control (SBPC)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 National Programme on AMR Containment<\/span><\/p>\n
