{"id":266116,"date":"2023-10-25T18:50:44","date_gmt":"2023-10-25T13:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=266116"},"modified":"2023-10-25T18:50:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T13:20:44","slug":"understanding-the-components-of-a-sim-card-its-functions-and-working","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/understanding-the-components-of-a-sim-card-its-functions-and-working\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding the components of a SIM card, its functions and working"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cUnderstanding the components of a SIM card, its functions and working\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>\u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 25th October 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, the SIM card has shrunk from the SIM to the mini SIM to the micro SIM to the nano SIM.The latest on this path is the eSIM card.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a SIM Card?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIM stands for \u2018subscriber identification module\u2019.It is an integrated circuit or a microchip that identifies the subscriber on a given network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for a mobile phone to connect to any cellular network that follows the Global System for Mobile Communications(GSM) standard, a SIM card is mandatory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This relationship is established using a unique authentication key \u2014 a piece of data that you need to \u2018unlock\u2019 access to the network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every SIM card stores this data and it is designed such that you can\u2019t access it through your phone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, signals sent by your phone into the network are \u2018signed\u2019 by the key and the network uses the signature to understand whether your phone\u2019s connection is legitimate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is possible to duplicate a SIM card by accessing its key and putting it into another card.This is known as SIM cloning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What information does a SIM card store?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SIM card contains important information that identifies the user to the mobile network and allows the device to connect to the network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information includes its own ID number (the integrated circuit card identifier), the International mobile subscriber identity(IMSI), the subscriber\u2019s location area identity (i.e. their current location), a list of preferred networks (to whom the subscriber can connect when roaming) and emergency numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is eSIM?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An eSIM, or embedded SIM is a digital or electronic SIM card that is built into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch, rather than being a physical, removable card.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It serves the same purpose as a traditional SIM card, which is to identify a user to a mobile network and enable connectivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advantages of eSIM:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Firstly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is considered to be environmentally friendlier than a physical SIM.Its reprogrammability means no need for more plastic and metal for a new SIM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if a malicious person gains access to your phone, they won\u2019t be able to separately access the SIM application nor be able to duplicate it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Disadvantages of eSIM:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Firstly, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in some countries, including the U.S, eSIMs can be programmed by subscribers themselves.But this process might be difficult for those with low digital literacy such as the elderly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an eSIM can in theory allow network operators to track subscribers data including inside apps on the device, especially in the absence of data privacy laws.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cUnderstanding the components of a SIM card, its functions and working\u201d published in \u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 25th October 2023 What is the News?
