News<\/span><\/b>:\u202fThis article discusses the causes behind the recent degradation of air quality in Mumbai. It also suggests steps to tackle the rising challenge aggravated by climate change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai has registered <\/span>\u201cmoderate\u201d or \u201cpoor\u201d <\/span><\/b>during the post-monsoon period for the second consecutive year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Air Quality Index?<\/h2>\n

Notified by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), AQI considers <\/span>8\u00a0pollutants<\/span><\/b> (PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, NH3, and Pb). There are six AQI categories, namely Good, Satisfactory, Moderately polluted, Poor, Very Poor, and Severe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does Mumbai\u2019s geography affect its air quality?<\/h2>\n

The coastal city has a <\/span>natural cleaning mechanism<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strong surface winds lead to faster dispersal of pollutants, and the strong sea-breeze sweeps away these particles from the land.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the reasons behind rising air pollution in Mumbai recently?<\/h2>\n

It is a result of a combination of factors. These include: <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) <\/span>\u201cTriple dip\u201d La Ni\u00f1a:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last winter, Mumbai experienced record-breaking particulate pollution, which was related to the unusual <\/span>\u201ctriple dip\u201d La Ni\u00f1a conditions<\/span><\/b>\u2014 linked to climate change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This had led to <\/span>hardly any wind reversal from across the Arabian Sea<\/span><\/b>, which would otherwise occur every 2 to 3 days and disperse pollutants in the air.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is La Ni\u00f1a?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The weather pattern known as La Ni\u00f1a brings warmer-than-normal sea-surface temperatures (in red) to the southern Pacific Ocean around northern Australia, New Guinea, and the islands of Indonesia. The cooler sea-surface temperatures of La Ni\u00f1a (in blue) occur in the southern Pacific off the coast of South America.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A “triple-dip” La Ni\u00f1a is\u202f<\/span>a multi-year cooling of the surface temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean<\/span><\/b>.\u202fIt’s called a “triple-dip” because it lasts for three consecutive northern hemisphere winters.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) <\/span>Delay in\u00a0the withdrawal of monsoon:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>withdrawal of the monsoon was delayed<\/span><\/b> till October. It plays a critical role in Mumbai\u2019s air quality.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The withdrawal is always followed by an <\/span>anti-cyclonic circulation above Mumbai<\/span><\/b> leading to weak ventilation in the city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) <\/span>Role of transport winds:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the transport level winds (a measure of the average rate of the <\/span>horizontal transport of air<\/span><\/b>) transported pollutants towards Mumbai.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These winds encountered warmer winds which were laden with<\/span> local dust<\/span><\/b>. This dust-filled cloud pushed towards Mumbai and was halted because of the calm winds, deteriorating the city\u2019s air quality.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) <\/span>PM10 pollution due to anthropogenic emissions:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PM10 stands for particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less. It continues to be the major pollutant in the city. These coarser particles are largely a result of <\/span>dust emissions<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many <\/span>development and construction activities<\/span><\/b> are being undertaken across the city \u2014 these include the <\/span>coastal corridor<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>Metro<\/span><\/b> and other digging activities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be done to tackle this?<\/h2>\n

1) <\/span>Prioritizing long-term mitigation planning: <\/span><\/b>This should be based on <\/span>mapping airsheds <\/span><\/b>\u2014 areas where pollutants get trapped.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) <\/span>Tackling climate change: <\/span><\/b>It is leading to extreme and unusual weather events leading to changes in the ecosystem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)<\/span> Addressing<\/span><\/b> anthropogenic emissions <\/span><\/b>(root cause of air pollution)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) <\/span>Data- and science-driven approach:<\/span><\/b> Data from reliable scientific sources should be taken into account.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5) <\/span>Using<\/span><\/b> green curtains:<\/span><\/b> in construction sites to reduce dust.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6) <\/span>Regular spraying of water: <\/span><\/b>Dampens dust particles and prevents them from becoming airborne.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

7) <\/span>Fossil fuel-less transportation:<\/span><\/b> Ensuring transitioning to <\/span>electric vehicles<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

8) <\/span>Waste Management: <\/span><\/b>Addressing solid waste management, cleaning up dumping grounds and industrial toxin management can improve air quality in the medium term.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
