What was the reason for the sentencing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The precise charges remain unknown.<\/p>\n

Various news reports suggest that they were arrested for allegedly leaking classified information<\/strong> related to a high-value Qatari submarine project.<\/p>\n

There is also speculation in some news reports that the receiver of the classified information was Israel.<\/p>\n

What makes the situation challenging? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) Secrecy of the trial: <\/strong>The precise nature of charges is not yet known.<\/p>\n

2) India\u2019s investments in bilateral relations:<\/strong> India has invested a lot to improve bilateral relations with Qatar, in line with India\u2019s greater engagement with other Gulf states.<\/p>\n

3) Qatar\u2019s geopolitical standings: <\/strong>Qatar also hosts a plethora of opposition and militant movement leaders from the Islamic world, including from Palestinian Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, and Taliban.<\/p>\n

4) Interests of global and regional powers: <\/strong>Qatar houses American and Turkish military-bases and simultaneously has a working relationship with Iran.<\/p>\n

5) Soft power: <\/strong>In the government-owned Al Jazeera broadcaster, Doha has an opinion-influencer in the region.<\/p>\n

6) Fuel exports to India:<\/strong> India is one of the largest importers of Qatari gas.<\/p>\n

7) Large Indian diaspora: <\/strong>800,000 Indians live and work in Qatar.<\/p>\n

India will have to tread very carefully as it tries to help the ex-navy personnel.<\/p>\n
