It also highlights the issues with India\u2019s utilization of the GI-Tag.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is a GI Tag?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the <strong>World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)<\/strong>, a GI tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that is due to that origin.<\/p>\n<p>A GI right prevents its use by a third party whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.<\/p>\n<p>However, a protected GI does not enable the holder to prevent someone from making a product using the same techniques as those set out in the standards for that indication.<\/p>\n<p>GI tags in India are issued as per the <strong>Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, of 1999.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the importance of a GI Tag?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) <strong>Revenue generator<\/strong>:\u00a0Patents and copyright protection of products result in higher economic gains, fostering quality production and better distribution of profits.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>Global reach<\/strong>: For e.g., Amazon\u2019s \u2018local to global\u2019 programme has taken Indian GI-tagged products to the global market.<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>Passion economy and entrepreneurship<\/strong>: It will convert talent into entrepreneurship and create a \u201cpassion\u201d economy.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>Employment creation<\/strong>: The labour-intensive nature of GI-tagged products can boost the employment in India.<\/p>\n<p>5) <strong>Women empowerment<\/strong>: It can also increase India\u2019s low female labour force participation rate.<\/p>\n<p>6) <strong>Reverse urban migration<\/strong>: it will conserve India\u2019s ancient crafts, culture and food and may also rejuvenate local MSMEs.<\/p>\n<p>7) <strong>Positive benefits for local communities<\/strong>: It encourage the preservation of biodiversity, local know-how and natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>8) <strong>Soft power<\/strong>: A strong GI ecosystem can be a source of soft power. For instance, French Champagne.<\/p>\n<p>9) <strong>Consumer rights<\/strong>: GIs protects producers and their reputations and reassures consumers that a product is authentic.<\/p>\n<p>10) <strong>Preserve intellectual property<\/strong>: They authenticate and symbolise an IPR owned collectively by producers in a region.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the challenges India is facing with respect to GI-Tags?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) <strong>Lack of a strategy for using the GI to commercial advantage<\/strong>, especially in global markets.<\/p>\n<p>2) Lack of organised effort \u2014 governmental or institutional \u2014 to <strong>go beyond merely establishing distinctiveness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>3) Lack of dedication to <strong>quality control<\/strong>, as opposed to a mere indication of source. For instance, in the case of <strong>Alphonso Mango<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>4) Lack of <strong>marketing, branding, advertising, and trade promotions<\/strong>. For instance, with respect to Basmati<strong> rice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What should be the way forward?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>First,<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>a required skill for GI producers is <strong>digital literacy<\/strong>. This should be a priority agenda item for NGOs and stakeholders like the DPIIT.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second,<\/strong>\u00a0the Indian GI economy can showcase to the world a model for ethical capitalism, <strong>social entrepreneurship<\/strong>, <strong>de-urbanisation<\/strong>, and bringing <strong>women to the workforce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>regular audits and consultations<\/strong> with the GI producers must be mandated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth,<\/strong> <strong>organised marketing and value creation <\/strong>to grow the <strong>exclusivity<\/strong> and <strong>premiumness <\/strong>attached to their products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question for practice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite earning GI-Tags for a wide range of domestic products, India has failed to utilize the certification fully.
