{"id":267750,"date":"2023-11-04T18:15:22","date_gmt":"2023-11-04T12:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=267750"},"modified":"2023-11-04T18:15:22","modified_gmt":"2023-11-04T12:45:22","slug":"new-technology-for-converting-co2-to-co-holds-potential-for-carbon-capture-and-energy-saving-in-the-steel-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/new-technology-for-converting-co2-to-co-holds-potential-for-carbon-capture-and-energy-saving-in-the-steel-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"New technology for converting CO2 to CO holds potential for carbon capture and energy saving in the steel sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>New technology for converting CO2 to CO holds potential for carbon capture and energy saving in the steel sector<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> \u201cPIB\u201d on 3rd November 2023<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why in the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (NCoE-CCU) at IIT Bombay has developed a carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the CO2 Conversion Technology developed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Developed by: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (NCoE-CCU) at IIT Bombay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It converts carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) under electrocatalytic conditions at ambient temperatures and in the presence of water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the significance of this CO2 Conversion Technology?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon monoxide(CO) is a widely used chemical in the industry especially in the form of syngas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the steel industry, CO is an essential ingredient for converting iron ores to metallic iron in blast furnaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, CO is generated by partial oxidation of coke\/coal which leads to a significant production of CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as an end product of this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this emitted CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be captured and converted into CO, it can lead to a circular economy in this process while reducing the carbon footprint and associated costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the process for CO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to CO conversion occurs at elevated temperatures (400-750 \u00b0C) making it an energy-intensive process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this newly developed CO2 conversion process requires only minimal energy as it can proceed under ambient temperatures (25-40 \u00b0C) in the presence of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the energy required for this electrocatalysis reaction can be harnessed directly from a renewable energy source (in the form of a solar panel or windmill) for a carbon-neutral conversion process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus:<\/strong> Environment<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cNew technology for converting CO2 to CO holds potential for carbon capture and energy saving in the steel sector\u201d published in \u201cPIB\u201d on 3rd November 2023 Why in the News?
