Why in the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Defence Minister has approved a proposal for extending the rules for maternity, child care and child adoption leave for women soldiers, sailors and air warriors in the Armed Forces on a par with their officer counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the initiatives taken to encourage women in Defence Forces?<\/b><\/h2>\n

1.Indian Army: <\/b>Indian Army is encouraging women officers to join the force by initiatives such as:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Granting Permanent Commission: <\/b>Women Officers (WOs) in 12 Arms & Services are eligible for Permanent Commission. This ensures parity with male counterparts and fosters a gender-neutral environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Entry in National Defence Academy (NDA)<\/b>: Women candidates now join the NDA every six months.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Opportunities in Aviation<\/b>: WOs can serve as pilots in the Corps of Army Aviation, expanding roles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Enrollment of Women as Other Ranks<\/b>: Provision introduced in 2019 for enrolling women in the Corps of Military Police.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.Indian Navy Measures for women personnel:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2013 Women in all Branches:<\/b>\u00a0 Entry of women in all branches\/ Cadres\/ Specialisations (except Submarine specialization) has commenced <\/span>from June <\/span><\/i>2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 On board Ships:<\/b> Women officers are also being appointed on board warships.<\/span><\/p>\n

— Indian Naval Academy Inclusions:<\/b> Eligibility through the ’10+2 B.Tech.’ entry scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n

— Women Agniveers:<\/b> As a part of the Agnipath Scheme, women have been enrolled as Agniveers commencing from the first batch itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3.Indian Air Force <\/b>Measures for women personnel:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2013 All Combat roles: <\/b>The experimental scheme to induct women officers in all combat roles, was initiated by the IAF in 2015 and was regularized in the year 2022 into a permanent Scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018DISHA\u2019 cell at Indian Air Force Headquarters: <\/b>It conducts various Induction Publicity programmes across the country related to the induction\/ career of officer cadre in IAF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
