{"id":268165,"date":"2023-11-07T19:46:48","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T14:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=268165"},"modified":"2023-11-09T14:44:02","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T09:14:02","slug":"wolbachia-method","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/wolbachia-method\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolbachia Method"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; This post &#8220;<strong>Wolbachia Method<\/strong>&#8221; is based on the article &#8220;<strong>How mosquitoes stopped mosquitoes from spreading dengue in an Indonesian city<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8221; published in &#8220;<strong>The Indian Express<\/strong>&#8221; on 29 August 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers in Indonesia have found a way to fight disease-bearing mosquitoes, by breeding a species of mosquito which carries a certain kind of bacteria that prevents viruses like dengue from growing inside them.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Wolbachia?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>(1)<\/strong> Wolbachia is a common <strong>bacteria that occurs naturally in 60% of insect species<\/strong>, including some mosquitoes, fruit flies, moths, dragonflies and butterflies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2)<\/strong> Wolbachia is <strong>usually not found in the Andes aegypti mosquito <\/strong>(the primary species responsible for transmitting human viruses such as Zika, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever).<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3)<\/strong> Wolbachia is <strong>safe for humans, animals and the environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What is Wolbachia Method? And how it works?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>(1)<\/strong> <strong>Bacteria Introduction<\/strong>&#8211; In the Wolbachia method, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are introduced with the bacterium in the lab and then researchers release them into the wild.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2)<\/strong> <strong>Population Replacement Strategy-<\/strong> Now, the Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes breed with their wild counterparts which result in a growing percentage of the bacterium in those mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3)<\/strong> This makes it harder for viruses to reproduce inside the mosquitoes.
