NASA’s Lucy mission has discovered that the Asteroid Dinkinesh is actually a binary system of two asteroids.<\/p>\n

(Trojans are a group of small bodies that orbit the Sun in two \u201cswarms\u201d along the orbit of Jupiter.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Launched by<\/strong><\/td>\nNASA on 16 October 2021<\/strong> through Atlas V 401 rocket.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

What are Asteroids?<\/h2>\n

Asteroids are small, airless rocky worlds revolving around the sun that are too small to be called planets. They are also known as planetoids or minor planets.<\/p>\n

What is Asteroid Dinkinesh?<\/h2>\n

(1)<\/strong> Dinkinesh (Dinkinesh means \u201cmarvelous\u201d in the Amharic language<\/strong>) is a main-belt binary asteroid. (Binary asteriod is a system of two asteroids orbiting their common centre of mass, which is also called the bary-center).<\/p>\n

(2)<\/strong> Dinkinesh was discovered on 4 November 1999<\/strong> by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) sky survey at Socorro, New Mexico.<\/p>\n

What are the Observations made by NASA about Asteroid Dinkinesh?<\/h2>\n

(1) Binary Pair<\/strong>– The main belt asteroid Dinkinesh is actually two asteroids bound together<\/strong> as a binary pair.<\/p>\n

(2) Brightness\u00a0<\/strong>fluctuation<\/b>– Asteroid\u2019s brightness is changing over time.<\/p>\n

(3) Size Estimation<\/strong>– The larger body is about 790 meters<\/strong> wide while the smaller one is about 220 meters<\/strong> in size.<\/p>\n
