Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified the regulations for foreign universities to set up and operate their campuses in India.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key regulations notified by UGC for setting up foreign universities campuses in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Eligibility Criteria\u00a0<\/b><\/td>\n1. It must be ranked among the top 500 universities in the world according to a list approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
\n<\/span>2. It\u00a0must be ranked among the top 500 universities in a specific subject according to a list approved by the UGC.
\n<\/span>3. It\u00a0must have exceptional expertise in a particular field, as determined by the UGC.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Application Process<\/b><\/td>\n1. The\u00a0application should be submitted on the UGC portal.
\n<\/span>2. The\u00a0UGC will then constitute a Standing Committee to examine the application.
\n<\/span>3. The\u00a0recommendations of the Standing Committee shall be placed before the UGC within a period of 60 days from the date of receipt of the application.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Foreign Contributions<\/b><\/td>\nIn case a Foreign University wants to receive or utilize foreign contributions, it will have to obtain registration or prior permission under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Setting up of campus<\/b><\/td>\n1. Two or more than two universities can collaborate to set up campuses in India, provided each institution meets the eligibility criteria individually.
\n<\/span>2. Each foreign university can set up more than one campus in India. However, they shall make a separate application for each proposed campus to the UGC.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Programmes and courses<\/b><\/td>\n1. No programmes can be offered online or in Open and Distance Learning modes. However, lectures in online mode not exceeding 10% of the programme requirements are allowed.
\n<\/span>2. The foreign \u200b\u200b<\/span>universities are not allowed to open learning centers, study centres or franchises that may act as representative offices of the parent entity.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Faculty<\/b><\/td>\nForeign universities shall have autonomy to recruit faculty and staff as per their recruitment norms.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fee Structure<\/b><\/td>\nForeign Universities can decide their fee structure. But the regulations suggest they provide \u201cfree concession\u201d to Indian citizens.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
