The International Space Station has completed 25 years of its journey since the first module launched into orbit in 1998.<\/p>\n

What is the ISS?<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The ISS is the largest modular space station in low Earth orbit<\/strong>.
\n2. It is the largest human made structure in space, serving as a laboratory for new researches and technological developments<\/strong> and also serves as an observation platform.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Launched on\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n\u00a020 November, 1988 from Kazakhstan<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Agencies involved\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\nFive space agencies<\/strong>: the United States’ NASA, Russia’s Roscosmos, Japan’s JAXA, Europe’s ESA, and Canada’s CSA<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Orbit<\/strong><\/td>\nIt orbits earth at an average altitude of 400 km <\/strong>and circles the globe every 90-93 minutes at a speed of 28,000 km\/h.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Construction & Components<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The ISS was constructed piece by piece in the orbit<\/strong>. The first module, The Zarya, <\/strong>lifted off in November 1998.
\n2. The station is divided into two sections<\/strong>:
\n– The Russian Orbital Segment (ROS)<\/strong>, which is operated by Russia.
\n– The United States Orbital Segment (USOS)<\/strong>, which is run by the United States and other countries.
\n3. The ISS consists of pressurised habitation modules<\/strong>, structural trusses, photovoltaic solar arrays, thermal radiators, docking ports, experiment bays and robotic arms.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Size\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\nIt weighs almost<\/strong> 450 tonnes<\/strong> and covers an area of a football field.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance<\/strong><\/td>\nIt serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory<\/strong> in which scientific research is conducted in astrobiology, astronomy, meteorology, and various other fields needed for future human space exploration.
\nMore than 3,000 experiments have been conducted aboard ISS.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Notable success<\/strong><\/td>\n1. Medical discovery<\/strong>– Research on ISS led to advancements in osteoporosis treatments and understanding muscle atrophy.
\n2. Dark matter<\/strong>– The most notable ISS experiment is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS)<\/strong>, which is intended to detect dark matter and answer other fundamental questions about our universe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Mission life\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is expected to operate till 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
India’s mission<\/strong><\/td>\n1. India plans to have own space station by 2035<\/strong> which would weigh 20 tonnes<\/strong> and maintain an orbit of approximately 400 kilometers above the Earth, where astronauts could stay for 15\u201320 days.
\n2. NASA and ISRO have agreed to a joint mission<\/strong> to the International Space Station in 2024.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Other countries mission<\/strong><\/td>\nChina’s Tiangong space station <\/strong>(launched in 2021) is a permanently crewed space station constructed by China and operated by China Manned Space Agency in low Earth.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Note- <\/strong>Russia has announced in 2022 that it has decided to quit the International Space Station after 2024 and focus on building its own space station.<\/p>\n
