Scientists have created a 2D protein monolayer by assembling lysozyme molecules<\/strong>. This can help study diseases such as Amyloidosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Amyloidosis?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Definition<\/b><\/td>\nIt is a<\/span> rare disease<\/strong> that occurs when a protein called amyloid builds up in organs<\/strong>. This amyloid buildup can make the organs not work properly.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Affected organs<\/b><\/td>\nOrgans that may be affected include the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system and digestive tract.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Causes<\/b><\/td>\nSecondary to a different health condition or can develop as a primary condition. Sometimes it is due to a mutation in a gene.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Types<\/b><\/td>\nAL (primary) amyloidosis<\/b>: People with conditions such as multiple myeloma or a bone marrow illness are more likely to have this.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
AA (secondary) amyloidosis<\/b>: It is caused by fragments of amyloid A protein and affects the kidneys in about 80 percent of cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR)<\/b>: It can be inherited from a family member. People of African descent may be more likely to carry the gene.
\n<\/span>Note:<\/strong> Transthyretin is a protein that is also known as prealbumin. It is made in the liver.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Treatment<\/b><\/td>\nChemotherapy, Bone Marrow Transplant and medications.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What is <\/b>Lysozyme?<\/b><\/h2>\n

1) Lysozyme is a protein present in mucosal secretions<\/strong>. It is <\/span>found in various bodily fluids like tears, saliva, mucus and human milk.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) It plays a crucial role in the body’s defense system<\/strong> by breaking down bacterial cell walls and acting as an antimicrobial agent.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Large amounts of lysozyme can be found in egg white<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

4) It can be regarded as a model protein in studying diseases like Amyloidosis<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
