Rooted in ancient texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and various philosophical treatises, it includes several major schools of thought like Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa, Vedanta, and more.<\/p>\n

Each of these offers distinct insights into the nature of reality and the human condition through rigorous inquiry, debate, and exploration of fundamental questions about life and the universe.<\/p>\n

In this tradition, all schools of philosophy had to provide proofs, or pram\u0101nas<\/em><\/strong>, for their conceptual framework.<\/p>\n

What are the different pramanas<\/em> accepted in Indian Philosophy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Pramana<\/strong><\/td>\nDefinition<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Pratyaksha<\/strong><\/td>\nDirect perception or knowledge gained through sensory perception, i.e., seeing, hearing, etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Anumana<\/strong><\/td>\nInference, or knowledge obtained through logical reasoning based on observations or evidence.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Upamana<\/strong><\/td>\nAnalogy, where knowledge is gained by comparing or likening something to a familiar object.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Shabda<\/strong><\/td>\nTestimony, or knowledge derived from trustworthy sources such as scriptures or experts.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Arthapatti<\/strong><\/td>\nPostulation or presumption, used to explain a fact when no other pramana can explain it.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Anupalabdhi<\/strong><\/td>\nNon-apprehension, or knowledge obtained from the absence or non-existence of something.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What is the Materialist School of Indian Philosophy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Materialist School upheld the pratyaksa pram\u0101na <\/em><\/strong>(perception, or more literally that which is within sight) as the foundation of knowledge.<\/p>\n

Its tenets included:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perception as Foundation of All Knowledge:<\/strong> The implication of this principle is the denial of innate ideas (ideas or consciousness exisiting independent of the material world).<\/p>\n

Pleasure-seeking:<\/strong> The dictum of \u2018eat, drink and be merry\u2019 describes the pleasure-seeking ways of materialists, best encapsulated by the Sanskrit dictum \u201cy\u0101vat j\u012bv\u0113t sukham j\u012bv\u0113t<\/em>\u201c or \u201cwhilst living, live well\u201d.<\/p>\n

Focus on Individual and not Collective Ethics:<\/strong> Unsound ethics will have consequences on the material world. So the question of ethics is left for each person to answer for themselves.<\/p>\n

Lack of a Divine Agency: <\/strong>No divine agency exists to safeguard human society from terrors, either natural or human. They do not believe in God, punishment and rewards.<\/p>\n

Material Notion of Hell: <\/strong>The experience of hell is defined as death by the enemy\u2019s weapon, diseases, starvation and other such pains.<\/p>\n

Material Notion of Heaven: <\/strong>The Lok\u0101yatas\u2019 conception of heaven reflects the male preoccupation with the female of the human species.<\/p>\n

Discarded Ritualism: <\/strong>The Lok\u0101yatas found the ritualism in the concluding periods of the Vedic era exploitative and useless.<\/p>\n

Against Orthodoxy and Social Ills: <\/strong>Caste, rank in society or orthodoxy of views were out of the question in their society. They entertained freedom in thought, in religious and social matters.<\/p>\n
