Why in the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

A <\/span>study by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has for the first time confirmed the presence of the Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) virus in two more districts of Karnataka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transmission\u00a0<\/b><\/td>\nIt is transmitted through the bite of ticks and bonnet<\/strong>.
\n<\/span>Black-faced langur monkeys<\/strong> are highly susceptible to the infection. They play a significant role in the spread of the virus in the human population.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
First identified in<\/b><\/td>\nKyasanur forest in Karnataka in 1957<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/b><\/td>\nChills, frontal headache, body ache and high fever for five to 12 days.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Mortality rate<\/b><\/td>\n2 to 10%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Diagnosis<\/b><\/td>\nMolecular detection by PCR or virus isolation from blood.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Treatment<\/b><\/td>\nThere is no specific treatment for monkey fever. <\/span>A vaccine (Formalin inactivated KFDV vaccine)<\/strong> does exist for KFD and is used in endemic areas of India<\/span>.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
