Why in the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

China has reportedly established the world\u2019s first \u2018Near-Space Command\u2019<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Near Space Command established by China?<\/b><\/h2>\n

1) Near Space Command will be the fifth force of the Chinese <\/strong><\/span>People\u2019s Liberation Army<\/strong>. The other four branches are Army, Navy, Air Force and Rocket Force.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) It will operate in the near space area and will report directly <\/span>to the highest level of the military.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) The command will be equipped <\/strong><\/span>with modern hypersonic missiles<\/strong>, <\/span>a large number of spy balloons, solar-powered long-endurance drones<\/strong> and other associated equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

4) In the event of future wars, the near-space command will be tasked with carrying out attacks on critical targets and conducting high-altitude surveillance<\/strong> through automated drones and spy balloons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why has China built the near space command?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Chinese believe that space is the next battleground and dominating near-space will provide China with an edge in future wars.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Near Space?<\/b><\/h2>\n

1) Near Space refers to the area in Earth’s atmosphere which is approximately 20 to 100 kilometers from the Earth’s surface<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) In this region the air is very thin. This prevents traditional military aircraft from flying and <\/span>satellites can’t stay in orbit because of strong gravity. <\/span>Hence, this makes it a No-Man’s land region<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) However, <\/span>hypersonic missiles can easily operate in this area<\/strong> because the air is thin, allowing them to fly very fast for long distances.<\/span><\/p>\n
