\n<\/span>3) <\/span>They remain underwater <\/b>throughout their life.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance<\/b><\/td>\n1) A<\/span>xolotl are a cultural icon in Mexico for their unique slimy appearance and for their ability to regrow limbs.
\n<\/span>2) Scientists think that this regenerating power of <\/span>A<\/span>xolotls could hold the secret to tissue repair and even cancer recovery in future.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Threats\u00a0<\/b><\/td>\nPopulation density of Mexican Axolotl has <\/span>reduced by 99.5% in under two decades<\/b>.<\/span>
\n<\/span>They are <\/span>facing extinction primarily due to:
\n<\/span>1) <\/span>Water Pollution: <\/b>Poor water quality of the freshwater lakes and ponds they inhabit endangers their existence.
\n<\/span>2) <\/span>Chrytid Fungus:<\/b> It is a skin eating disease that causes amphibian deaths from Europe to Australia.
\n<\/span>3) <\/span>Other reasons are:<\/b> habitat loss due to rapid urbanization, invasive species like rainbow trouts, etc<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
