Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Rescuers are planning to use \u2018rat-hole\u2019 mining to rescue 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Rat Hole Mining?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What is it?<\/b><\/td>\nRat hole mining is a method of extracting coal from narrow, horizontal seams prevalent in Meghalaya.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Process of rat hole mining<\/b><\/td>\n1) In this mining process, narrow pits are dug into the ground.
\n<\/span>2) Once the pits are dug, miners descend using ropes or bamboo ladders to reach the coal seams.
\n<\/span>3) The coal is then manually extracted using primitive tools such as pickaxes, shovels and baskets.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Types<\/b><\/td>\nSide Cutting: <\/b>Narrow tunnels are excavated into the hill slopes and workers enter these openings to locate the coal seam.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Box-cutting:<\/b> In this, a rectangular opening is made and through that a vertical pit is dug. Once the coal seam is found, rat-hole-sized tunnels are dug horizontally through which workers can extract the coal.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Concerns<\/b><\/td>\n1) Environmental concerns: <\/b>M<\/span>ining process can cause land degradation, deforestation and water pollution.
\n<\/span>2) <\/span>Safety concerns:<\/b> They lack safety measures such as proper ventilation or safety gear for the workers. There is also a <\/span>risk of loss of lives either due to rat holes flooding or rat holes collapsing.
\n<\/span>3) <\/span>Social concern:<\/b> Due to the small size of tunnel, they <\/span>employ children as workers.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
NGT on rat hole mining<\/b><\/td>\nThe National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned this practice in 2014 and retained the ban in 2015.
\n<\/span>The Meghalaya government then appealed the order in the Supreme Court.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
