{"id":27192,"date":"2018-10-23T11:49:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27192"},"modified":"2018-10-23T11:49:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:19:17","slug":"garibi-hatao-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/garibi-hatao-redux\/","title":{"rendered":"Garibi hatao\u2019 redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/opinion\/editorial\/garibi-hatao-redux\/article25073443.ece\"><strong>Garibi hatao\u2019 redux<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>An \u00a0update of the <strong>Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)<\/strong>, bought out by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative recently has given poverty estimates about India.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Report named \u201c<em>The Global Multidimensional Poverty Index Report: The Most Detailed Picture to Date of the World\u2019s Poorest People<\/em>\u201d presents the global MPI 2018, to better align the global MPI with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>3.Findings of the report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India has reduced its Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) by almost half from 55 per cent to 28%\u00a0 between 2005-06 and 2015-16.<\/li>\n<li>Around 271 million people have been taken out of poverty in a decade.<\/li>\n<li>Despite reduction in the poverty index, 364 millions continue to experience acute deprivations in health, nutrition, schooling and sanitation.<\/li>\n<li>19% of the population is still vulnerable to multidimensional poverty and about 9% to severe MDP.<\/li>\n<li>196 million poor people live in the four states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Delhi, Kerala and Goa have the lowest number of poor people.<\/li>\n<li>Traditionally disadvantaged groups, in terms of caste, religions continue to hang at the most bottom rung of the ladder, though the same group has shown a major reduction in the MPI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> About Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The multidimensional index measures multiple deprivations in education, health and living standards in the same household.<\/li>\n<li>Ten indicators were mainly taken into account for this report which include, nutrition, child mortality, years of schooling, school attendance, sanitation, cooking fuel, drinking water, electricity, housing and assets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Tackling poverty<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The welfare commitment of the Centre and States should focus on outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>The advantages of digitisation, must be stepped up along with focus on improving household incomes.<\/li>\n<li>Employment generation by teaching individuals the right skills (both technical skills and soft skills) required in a modern workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Garibi hatao\u2019 redux News: An \u00a0update of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), bought out by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative recently has given poverty estimates about India.
