{"id":272267,"date":"2023-12-08T19:41:36","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T14:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=272267"},"modified":"2023-12-08T19:41:36","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T14:11:36","slug":"cop28-gets-777mn-to-fight-neglected-tropical-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/cop28-gets-777mn-to-fight-neglected-tropical-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"COP28 gets $777mn to fight Neglected Tropical Diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; This post is based on the article &#8220;<strong>$777mn Pledged at RLM Forum to Tackle Neglected Tropical Diseases<\/strong>&#8221; published in &#8220;<strong>Emirati Times<\/strong>&#8221; on 3rd December 2023.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 2023 Reaching the Last Mile Forum at COP28 has secured over $777 million in pledges to address the growing challenge of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Reaching the Last Mile Forum?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) The Forum was hosted by <strong>Reaching the Last Mile<\/strong> (under the patronage of the President of the UAE), in collaboration with the <strong>Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2) Held on the sidelines of <strong>COP28 first ever &#8216;Health Day<\/strong>&#8216;, the forum serves as a platform to assess the effects of climate change on human health.<\/p>\n<p>3) At the forum, the <strong>expansion of the Reaching the Last Mile Fund (RLMF)<\/strong> from $100 million to $500 million was announced.<br \/>\n<strong>Note<\/strong> &#8211; It&#8217;s a 10-year, multi-donor fund, aimed at eliminating lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis (river blindness) in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>4) The pledge holds significance as the incidence of NTDs are expected to rise with global warming.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are Neglected Tropical Diseases?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) NTDs are diseases that are <strong>mainly prevalent in tropical areas<\/strong>, particularly among marginalized or isolated communities. <strong>For example<\/strong>&#8211; dengue and chikungunya, lymphatic filariasis, leprosy, yaws, etc.<\/p>\n<p>2) As these diseases have <strong>largely been wiped out in the more developed parts<\/strong> and persist mostly in the poorer countries, they are <strong>absent from the global health agenda<\/strong> and hence called \u2018neglected\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the Global initiatives to eliminate NTD?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) <strong>WHO NTD roadmap 2021-2030<\/strong> is blueprint to drive global efforts in the fight against NTDs in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>The London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases<\/strong> was a collaborative disease eradication programme launched on 30 January 2012 in London.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>For more information on Neglected tropical diseases and Govt. of India efforts to tackle NTD <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/neglected-tropical-diseases-day-india-can-beat-them-but-that-needs-bold-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click Here to Read<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus- Science &amp; Technology\/ Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source&#8211; This post is based on the article &#8220;$777mn Pledged at RLM Forum to Tackle Neglected Tropical Diseases&#8221; published in &#8220;Emirati Times&#8221; on 3rd December 2023.
