{"id":27230,"date":"2018-10-23T12:18:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27230"},"modified":"2018-10-23T12:18:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T06:48:43","slug":"g-4-for-un-security-council-reform-multilateralism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/g-4-for-un-security-council-reform-multilateralism\/","title":{"rendered":"G-4 for UN Security Council reform, multilateralism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/g-4-countries-for-multilateralism-unsc-reform\/article25049420.ece\">G-4 for UN Security Council reform, multilateralism<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>G-4 countries have reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and called for the early reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important Facts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>About G-4:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The group consists of four countries <strong>India, Brazil, Germany and Japan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These countries support each other\u2019s bid for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>About UNSC:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of five permanent members and 10 non permanent members.<\/li>\n<li>Permanent Members: U.S., China, Russia, France, United Kingdom.<\/li>\n<li>The permanent members have veto power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The G-4 foreign ministers met at the sidelines of 73<sup>rd<\/sup> session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outcome of the meeting of G-4 members:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>They stressed on the importance of reforms at the UNSC according to the contemporary needs of 21<sup>st<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>They called to initiate text-based negotiations to safeguard the legitimacy and credibility of the UNSC.<\/li>\n<li>The ministers reiterated their support for Africa\u2019s representation in a reformed and expanded Security Council.<\/li>\n<li>They stressed that substantial progress has not yet been achieved at the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) for the reforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Germany and Japan contribute one fifth of the UN budget while the four countries together have one fifth of the world population.<\/li>\n<li>S. and China have not been very keen on reforms at the UNSC and hence the reform process is lingering.<\/li>\n<li>Despite majority of UN member states supporting UNSC reform, the negotiations launched in 2009 have not produced substantive progress over the 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>G-4 for UN Security Council reform, multilateralism News G-4 countries have reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and called for the early reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
