{"id":27260,"date":"2018-10-23T12:40:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T07:10:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27260"},"modified":"2018-10-23T12:40:39","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T07:10:39","slug":"can-clean-india-campaign-pave-way-for-reversing-ganga-pollution-curve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/can-clean-india-campaign-pave-way-for-reversing-ganga-pollution-curve\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Clean India campaign pave way for reversing Ganga pollution curve?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/can-clean-india-campaign-pave-way-for-reversing-ganga-pollution-curve\/story-zhmOoiEhnYCcJNPpuMbfcO.html\">Can Clean India campaign pave way for reversing Ganga pollution curve?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) study was carried out across eight states to assess Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) &#8211; Clean India campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The study was carried out across eight states to explore the implementation of septic tanks in villages.<\/li>\n<li><strong> About Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM):<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Swachh Bharat Mission is a massive mass movement that seeks to create a Clean India by 2019.<\/li>\n<li>The mission will cover all rural and urban areas.<\/li>\n<li>The urban component of the mission will be implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development, and the rural component by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Under Swachh Bharat Mission, 4,471 villages have been declared open defecation-free along the Ganga basin with almost complete coverage in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh .<\/li>\n<li><strong> Findings of CPCB assessment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Domestic sewage from towns and villages along the Ganga is the main source of pollution (over 70%) in the river.<\/li>\n<li>Industrial effluents contribute to the rest of the pollution (30%).<\/li>\n<li>The faecal coliform (bacteria) levels in the Ganga stretches flowing through Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the past four years have not decreased considerably.<\/li>\n<li>Along \u00a0Ganga, water table is quite high and the septic tanks if not de-sludged properly, then the wastewater can leach into the groundwater.<\/li>\n<li>In many towns, there is no control over the design of pit tanks or on how they will be emptied.<\/li>\n<li>The septic tanks used in many urban areas under SBM cause second-generation problems either due to faulty construction or careless treatment of faecal sludge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong> Recommendations to decrease the sewage load:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Careful monitoring of septic tanks or pit designs.<\/li>\n<li>Reuse of sludge for compost.<\/li>\n<li>A decentralised approach in treating the sludge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong> SBM guidelines a solution to decrease the sewage load:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>On-site treatment plants:<\/strong>According to guidelines, if there is no sewerage facility, an on-site treatment system like twin pits, septic tanks, bio-digesters, or bio-tanks should be constructed for the collection, treatment and disposal of sewage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Twin-pit toilets:<\/strong> These are being built under SBM as treatment plants and do not require any faecal sludge treatment and the excreta turns into nutrient-rich compost after a year and can be used in farms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Awareness: <\/strong>Creating mass awareness through a multimedia campaign and interpersonal communication in villages regarding sewage tanks, design etc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can Clean India campaign pave way for reversing Ganga pollution curve?
