{"id":272635,"date":"2023-12-06T19:28:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T13:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=272635"},"modified":"2023-12-06T19:28:06","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T13:58:06","slug":"navy-of-ancient-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/navy-of-ancient-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy of Ancient India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source<\/strong>&#8211; This post is based on the article &#8220;<strong>Navy Day: As PM Modi praises Shivaji\u2019s naval prowess, a look at the Maratha Navy<\/strong>&#8221; published in &#8220;<strong>The Indian Express<\/strong>&#8221; on 5th December 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in the News?<\/h2>\n<p>PM Narendra Modi, on the occasion of Navy Day (December 4), highlighted Shivaji&#8217;s naval power, and announced that epaulettes (ornamental shoulder pieces denoting rank) adorned by naval officers will soon carry his emblem.<\/p>\n<h2>How Indian Navy acknowledged the naval power of the Marathas, under Shivaji?<\/h2>\n<p>1)<strong> INS Shivaji<\/strong>: To commemorate the sea-faring prowess of the Marathas, under Shivaji, the Indian Navy has named its training establishment in Lonavala as INS Shivaji.<\/p>\n<p>2)<strong> INS Angre<\/strong>: The shore-based logistics and administrative hub of the Western Naval Command, Mumbai, is named as INS Angre \u2014 after Kanhoji Angre (1669-1729), the celebrated Maratha naval commander.<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>New Naval Ensign<\/strong>: The use of the octagonal design of the seal of Shivaji on the new Naval Ensign.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the history of Shivaji&#8217;s Naval Power?<\/h2>\n<p>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha ruler, is considered by many as the <strong>\u2018Father of the Indian Navy\u2019<\/strong>. It is him who laid the foundation of a modern navy in India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birth of the Maratha Navy (1661-1663)<\/strong>: Between 1661 and 1663, the Maratha Navy came into existence, and at its peak included 400-odd ships of various kinds and sizes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philosophy of Naval Dominance<\/strong>: Historians note that his vision for the navy was based in his belief \u2013 \u201cJalameva yasya, balameva tasya\u201d, which translates to \u201cHe who rules over the seas is all powerful\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction of multiple naval forts<\/strong>&#8211; Between 1653 and 1680, Shivaji ordered the construction of multiple naval forts, <strong>starting with the Vijaydurg in 1653<\/strong>, and followed by the likes of Sindhudurg and Kolaba.
