{"id":27267,"date":"2018-10-23T12:46:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T07:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=27267"},"modified":"2018-10-23T12:46:02","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T07:16:02","slug":"a-study-of-intergenerational-mobility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-study-of-intergenerational-mobility\/","title":{"rendered":"A study of intergenerational mobility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/a-study-of-inter-generational-mobility\/article25032846.ece\">A study of intergenerational mobility<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The article discusses about progress amongst various groups on the basis of \u00a0intergenerational mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Intergenerational mobility refers to an improvement in social status of an individual or group from the previous generation.<\/li>\n<li>A recent paper, \u201cIntergenerational Mobility in India: Estimates from New Methods and Administrative Data\u201d analyses data from various <strong>India Human Development Surveys<\/strong> and the <strong>Socio-Economic Caste Census of 2011<\/strong> to determine this intergenerational mobility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Findings of the study to assess intergenerational mobility:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Variation amongst States:<\/strong> The southern states along with Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and J&amp;K have higher upward mobility .<\/li>\n<li>The upward mobility refers to the ability of an individual, family or some other group to improve \u00a0their economic,social and education status by means of their income,marriage, job etc.<\/li>\n<li>Few pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, southern Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, \u00a0West Bengal and Odisha and north-eastern States (except Manipur) have relatively lower upward mobility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variation amongst rural and urban areas:<\/strong> The mobility in urban areas is significantly higher than in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li>The mobility gap between urban and rural locations is about equal to today\u2019s gap between higher caste Hindus and SCs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variation amongst different groups: <\/strong>There is rising mobility among the SCs and STs post-liberalisation.<\/li>\n<li>Among Muslims, except in J&amp;K, there has been declining intergenerational mobility.<\/li>\n<li>Among the STs in \u00a0remote districts there is 59% upward mobility gap ( inequality in low-income families to achieve higher social and economic status) with the forward or other reference groups.<\/li>\n<li>On an average, children are most successful in exiting the bottom of the education distribution in places that are in south India, are urban, or in general have higher average education levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Predictors of upward mobility: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The average income and education in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li>The average education, size and low segregation in urban areas.<strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A study of intergenerational mobility News: The article discusses about progress amongst various groups on the basis of \u00a0intergenerational mobility.
