European Union (EU) lawmakers have reached a provisional deal on a comprehensive set of <\/span>rules regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the proposed European Union (EU) Artificial Intelligence Act?<\/h2>\n

It is <\/span>the world\u2019s first set of comprehensive law to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim: <\/b>To <\/span>ensure that fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environment are protected from high risk AI while boosting innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Key Provisions of the AI Law:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Specifications<\/b><\/td>\nDetails<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Four Levels of Risks<\/b><\/td>\n1) Unacceptable risk<\/b>: These are banned. Example- deployment of m<\/span>ass scale facial recognition.
\n<\/span>2) High risk: <\/b>These are allowed but are <\/span>subject to certification. Example- AI tools for self-driving cars.
\n<\/span>3) Medium Risk: <\/b>They can be deployed without restrictions but require detailed documentation. Example- generative AI chatbots.
\n<\/span>4) Minimal risk: <\/b>There are no restrictions on this. Example- AI powered spam filters and video games.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Biometric Surveillance<\/b><\/td>\nGovernments can only use real-time biometric surveillance in public areas only when there are serious threats involved such as terrorist attacks.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Empowering Consumers<\/b><\/td>\nConsumers can launch complaints against any perceived violations.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Penalties for Non Compliance<\/b><\/td>\nThe fines will be based on a percentage of their global annual turnover or a predetermined amount whichever is higher.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
EU AI Office<\/b><\/td>\nThe EU will establish the EU AI Office, tasked with monitoring and fining violators of the law.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

How are other countries planning to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI)?<\/h2>\n

1) <\/span>US:<\/b> Released an AI Bill of Rights and an Executive Order on AI.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) <\/span>China:<\/b> Released its own set of AI regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) <\/span>India: <\/b>India wants to take the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)<\/span> approach with AI where the underlying technology is sanctioned by the government and is later offered to private entities to develop various use cases.<\/p>\n
