Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, the Global Cooling Watch 2023 Report titled “Keeping it Chill: How to meet cooling demands while cutting emissions” was released.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Global Cooling Watch Report?<\/h2>\n

1) The report was released by UN Environment Programme (UNEP)-led Cool Coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) It has been released in support of the Global Cooling Pledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) It is a <\/span>comprehensive analysis of the global cooling sector and<\/span> focuses not only on space cooling but also on cold chains for food and health.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the Key Highlights of the Report?<\/h2>\n

1) <\/span>Currently, cooling equipment currently accounts for 20% of total electricity consumption and is expected to more than double by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Under a business-as-usual scenario, emissions from cooling are predicted to account for more than 10 per cent of global emissions in 2050.<\/p>\n

3) The report focuses on three key measures for sustainable cooling<\/strong>–
\na. Passive cooling
\nb. Higher-energy efficiency standards
\nc. Faster phase down of climate-warming hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants through the\u00a0Kigali Amendment\u00a0to the\u00a0Montreal Protocol.<\/p>\n

4) These measures could lead to 60 per cent cut off predicted 2050 sectoral emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is the Global Cooling Pledge?<\/h2>\n

1) Signed at COP28, the pledge aims t<\/span>o address <\/span>the growing demand for cooling while mitigating its climate impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n

2) 63 countries have signed the pledge. However, India has not signed it yet.<\/span><\/p>\n
